M49 is a magnitude 8.3 elliptical galaxy in Virgo. M49 was discovered by Charles Messier in February 1771. It is one of the most massive elliptical galaxies known, and has five times the mass of our Milky Way galaxy. M49 is located 42,000,000 light-years away and is part of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster.
This is an RGB composite CCD image taken with a Takahashi FCT-150 refractor using an SBIG ST-8XE CCD. This image was published in the April 2016 issue of Astronomy Magazine, at page 33.
