The Flame Nebula

The Flame Nebula

The Flame Nebula

The Flame Nebula is a large emission nebula located near Zeta Orionis, the bright star shown near the bottom left-center of this image. It is often overlooked due to the nearby spectacular Orion Nebula, which is a showpiece object even in small telescopes. The horsehead nebula is located only about a half degree away.

This is an LRGB CCD image taken with a Takahashi FCT-150 refractor using an STL-11000M CCD and a hydrogen alpha filter for the luminance channel data. The telescope was carried on an NJP mount. This image was taken from my backyard in Scottsdale, Arizona.
