In May 2013, three planets presented a nice show in the evening sky after sunset each day. Jupiter was slipping lower each day as it began to disappear in the glare of the Sun. Venus was just beginning to emerge from behind the Sun, and into the evening sky as the "evening star" for the remainder of the year. Mercury was making its best evening apparition of the year. On the day this image was taken, Venus was the brightest, and appeared at the bottom right. Jupiter was a slightly dimmer beacon of light at the bottom left. Mercury was above Venus, forming a right-angle triangle with the other two planets.
This image was taken from my backyard in Scottsdale, Arizona, with a Cannon EOS Digital Rebel SLR camera using a 300mm lens.
