This is an image of the transit of Venus on June 5, 2012. The Sun had a number of sunspots that day, which can be seen in this image. Compare this to an image that I took of the transit of Venus in 2004. Venus reaches a transit-enabling place in its orbit only when inferior conjunction takes place at the time that Venus is crossing the decending node or the ascending node of its orbit. Only on those relatively rare occasions do we see Venus transit across the face of the Sun.
This image was taken with a Canon EOS Digital Rebel SLR camera on a Takahashi FCT-150 refractor using a Thousand Oaks Optical Type 2+ solar filter.
