M58 is a magnitude 9.9 barred spiral galaxy in Virgo. M58 is located very close to M89 and M90. M58 was discovered in April 1779 by Charles Messier. This is a compact galaxy. M58 is about 50,000 light-years across, (or about half the size of our Milky Way Galaxy), but has a total mass comparable to the Milky Way at approximately 160 billion solar masses.
This is an RGB color composite CCD image taken with an SBIG ST-8XE CCD on a Takahashi FCT-150 refractor at f7.
