Eclipse of the Sun - May 20, 2012

This image shows the Sun during a solar eclipse on May 20, 2012. This partial eclipse shows the Sun at the beginning of an annular eclipse. The Moon was near its apogee in its orbit, and as a result, the apparent size of the Moon was smaller than the apparent size of the Sun so that a bright ring of the Sun remained showing around the outline of the Moon during maximum eclipse.

This image was taken from a location near Reno, Nevada, with a Takahashi FS-78 refractor mounted on a modified Takahashi EM-10 mount using a Canon EOS Digital Rebel SLR camera and Thousand Oaks Optical Type 2+ solar filter. From that location, I was able to observe the entire eclipse before sunset.
